Course: Exploring Technologies, Grade 9
Welcome to the History and Philosophy of Educational Technology!
INTRODUCTION
Many people are opposed to using video games or online games in education. They argue that not only is gaming sedentary, it exposes you to radiation from screens, and is bad for the eyes. In many cases, these games can also be addictive. However, Dr. Kathy Sanford from the University of Victoria has found that when teens play online games, they are actively making ethical and moral decisions (Hunter, 2013). Through online games, children also learn to negotiate, and have opportunities to develop their leadership skills (Hunter, 2013).
In this presentation, we will explore gaming technology and education from a historical and philosophical perspective. First, we will focus on three different cases - two of which look at how games are used creatively to promote learning, and one case in which extreme gaming leads to addiction. Then, we will look at three philosophers over a period of about 2400 years and what they are saying, or would have said about gaming and education.
As in most video games, there are 'levels' that you will need to complete in this presentation (6 levels in total). As you conquer each level, you will also expand and develop your own insight into the topic of Gaming Technology and Education. Have fun and good luck!
